Parlatoria

Parlatoria is a genus of small insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scale insects. These pests are notorious for their ability to infest perennial plantations covertly, forming dense colonies on bark, leaves, and fruits. They represent a significant threat to agriculture, as their presence is often only detected after they have caused substantial damage to the plant's vascular system.

This pest specializes in damaging various fruit and ornamental crops, with citrus, olives, apples, pears, and many tropical species being the most susceptible. In protected greenhouse environments or subtropical climates, these insects can infest almost any evergreen tree or shrub by extracting vital sap from the plant tissues.

The life cycle of the Parlatoria scale includes several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), settler, and adult. Females remain sessile under a protective shield, which they construct from their own secretions and cast-off larval skins. Dispersal across a farm typically occurs during the mobile crawler stage, when the insects are carried by wind, other insects, or contaminated farming equipment.

The primary damage is caused by the depletion of the host plant due to persistent sap extraction. Feeding sites often develop chlorotic spots, followed by bark cracking and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, heavy infestations are frequently accompanied by the growth of sooty mold, which thrives on the honeydew secreted by the scales, effectively blocking photosynthesis and weakening the plant further.

Management of Parlatoria requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Essential control strategies include:

• Sourcing high-quality, pest-free planting stock for new orchards.
• Performing regular sanitary pruning to thin out the canopy and improve airflow.
• Applying dormant horticultural oils to suffocate overwintering populations.
• Utilizing systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence window for maximum efficacy.
• Encouraging biological control by supporting populations of native parasitic wasps and predatory beetles.
