The citrus parlatoria scale (Parlatoria citri) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is widely recognized as a serious economic threat to citrus production in subtropical and tropical regions globally.

This insect primarily infests various species of citrus plants, including oranges, lemons, mandarins, and grapefruits. While citrus is the primary host, it can occasionally thrive on other evergreen plants, often residing in nurseries and sheltered environments where spread can be rapid.

The biology of Parlatoria citri involves a complex life cycle characterized by distinct stages. Adult females are sessile, remaining protected beneath a tough, hard scale. Reproduction is continuous in warm climates, allowing for multiple generations per year, which significantly complicates traditional control efforts.

Damage caused by this scale insect is systemic and localized. By inserting their stylets into plant tissues, they extract essential sap, which causes leaf yellowing, tissue necrosis, and reduced vigor. On fruit, the presence of these scales leads to pitting and unsightly blemishes, rendering the crop unsuitable for commercial markets.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Key strategies include the use of petroleum-based horticultural oils to suffocate the insects, the application of targeted systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence phase, and biological control using specific parasitoid wasps that help suppress population numbers in sustainable orchard systems.
