Parlatoria crypta

Parlatoria crypta

Description

Systematic position: Parlatoria crypta is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a highly specialized scale insect known for forming a hardened, waxy protective cover (test) that shields the insect from predators, environmental stressors, and standard contact pesticides, making it a challenging pest to eradicate.

Host range: This pest is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant hosts. It is particularly notorious for damaging citrus species, oleanders, roses, and various ornamental plants. By attaching itself to leaves, stems, and fruits, the insect creates a persistent threat to both commercial orchards and greenhouse nurseries.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. The crawler stage is the only mobile phase, allowing the insect to disperse to new parts of the host plant or neighboring vegetation. Once the crawler selects a suitable feeding site, it settles permanently, loses its legs, and begins constructing its characteristic protective scale covering.

Damage and economic impact: The damage is primarily caused by the extraction of plant sap, which leads to localized chlorosis, leaf deformation, and stunted growth. Severe infestations often result in massive leaf drop, dieback of twigs, and the growth of sooty mold on the honeydew secreted by the insects. This drastically reduces the marketability and vitality of the affected plants.

Control measures: Management strategies must be synchronized with the life cycle of the pest, particularly the emergence of crawlers.

  • Application of systemic insecticides that penetrate plant tissues.
  • Use of horticultural oils and mineral oils to physically smother the scale covers.
  • Regular pruning to improve canopy aeration and remove heavily infested branches.
  • Implementing strict quarantine protocols to prevent the introduction of infested plant material.
