Fuller's Parlatoria scale

Parlatoria fulleri

Description

Fuller's Parlatoria scale (lat. Parlatoria fulleri) is a destructive sucking pest classified within the family Diaspididae (armored scales). This species is well-known among agronomists for its ability to infest various woody ornamental and fruit-bearing plants, specifically thriving in warm, humid climates where citrus cultivation is prominent.

The host range of Parlatoria fulleri primarily includes citrus trees such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. While they prefer citrus, they can also be found on a variety of other subtropical plants, making them a significant concern for nurseries and commercial orchards that manage diverse botanical collections.

The life cycle of this armored scale consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The female insect remains stationary for her entire adult life, protected by a hard, waxy scale cover that acts as a barrier against environmental stress and many standard chemical treatments. The most vulnerable stage for pest control is the nymphal "crawler" phase, during which the larvae actively migrate to new feeding sites.

Damage caused by this scale is often characterized by chlorosis, leaf drop, and stunted growth. Because they extract sap directly from the vascular tissue, severe infestations can lead to limb dieback, twig deformation, and significant cosmetic damage to the fruit surface, rendering the crop unsuitable for commercial sale.

Control strategies must be comprehensive and timely. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs typically utilize systemic insecticides applied during peak crawler activity, as well as horticultural oils that suffocate the scales. Biological control, involving the introduction or protection of natural predators and parasitic wasps, is also an essential component for long-term suppression of the population.
