Pittosporum scale

The Pittosporum scale (Parlatoria pittospori) belongs to the family Diaspididae (armored scale insects), within the order Hemiptera. This species is a significant pest of various ornamental and fruit crops, frequently reported in warm climatic zones. The insect maintains a cryptic lifestyle, sheltering under a tough waxy covering, which renders it highly resistant to many standard contact insecticides.

The pest targets a diverse range of host plants, including species within the genus Pittosporum, Citrus, as well as various conifers and broad-leaved evergreens. In nurseries and landscape settings, the scale spreads rapidly via contaminated planting stock, colonizing leaves, twigs, and fruits, which severely debilitates the plant and impacts its ornamental or commercial value.

The biology of the species involves multiple generations per year, driven by environmental temperature. The life cycle progresses through egg, crawler, nymph, and adult stages. The crawler stage is the primary vector for infestation, as it moves actively across the plant until it identifies a suitable feeding site, settles permanently, and initiates the secretion of its protective scale.

Damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap from vital tissues. This feeding activity leads to leaf chlorosis, premature senescence, distortion of succulent shoots, and stunted overall growth. In cases of high infestation density, the plant surface becomes encrusted with scales, severely impairing photosynthetic capacity and potentially causing dieback of infested branches or even total plant collapse.

Management and control strategies include the following:

• Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures for all nursery stock.
• Manual removal of scales from stems in cases of localized, minor infestations.
• Application of systemic insecticides specifically timed to target the crawler stage.
• Use of horticultural mineral oils to smother the insects by obstructing their respiration.
• Conservation and release of biological control agents such as predatory beetles and parasitoid wasps.
