Description

The black parlatoria scale (Parlatoria ziziphi) is a destructive insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family. It is recognized by its distinct, dark, rectangular scale covering that protects the sedentary female. This species is a significant quarantine threat globally, causing substantial economic losses in citrus-producing regions.

This pest primarily infests citrus trees, including orange, lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit varieties. While it favors citrus, it can also be found on other broad-leaved evergreen plants. The insect colonizes both sides of the leaves, as well as fruits and thin green bark, often forming dense clusters that cover the plant surface entirely.

The life cycle involves several stages: egg, crawler (first instar nymph), sedentary nymph, and adult. The mobile crawler stage is crucial for dispersal, as these tiny nymphs move across the plant surface to find a suitable feeding site. Once attached, they insert their stylets into the plant tissue to extract sap and begin secreting their protective scale.

The primary damage caused by Parlatoria ziziphi includes physiological stress and plant debility due to nutrient extraction. Heavy infestations lead to leaf chlorosis, premature leaf drop, and dieback of young twigs. Furthermore, the presence of these insects on the peel of citrus fruits significantly degrades the quality and marketability of the produce, often triggering trade embargoes.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect. Strategies include:

  • Rigorous quarantine inspections of nursery stock and fruit shipments.
  • Application of horticultural mineral oils to smother the sedentary insects.
  • Targeted chemical sprays timed precisely with the crawler emergence period.
  • Biological control through the release of parasitoid wasps, such as Aphytis species.
