European fruit lecanium

Systematic position: The European fruit lecanium (Parthenolecanium cerasifex) is a member of the order Hemiptera, family Coccidae. It is a common and destructive sap-sucking pest that affects a wide variety of woody plants and fruit trees worldwide.

Host plants: This pest has a very broad host range, making it a persistent challenge in both commercial and domestic settings. It primarily targets stone fruits like plum, cherry, apricot, and peach, but it is also frequently found on pome fruits such as apple and pear, as well as various ornamental and shade trees.

Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as a second-instar nymph, typically attached to the undersides of twigs and branches. As spring temperatures rise, these nymphs resume feeding and develop into mature females. By early summer, they lay a significant number of eggs under their protective shells. The emerging crawlers move onto leaves to feed until autumn, at which point they migrate back to the twigs to hibernate.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The primary harm caused by this insect is the extraction of massive amounts of plant sap, which weakens the tree, stunts shoot growth, and reduces fruit yield. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a black, unsightly coating on leaves and fruit, significantly reducing photosynthesis and marketability.

Control measures:

• Applying dormant horticultural oil sprays in early spring to smother overwintering nymphs.
• Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce the overall population density.
• Using systemic or contact insecticides during the crawler stage, which is the most vulnerable period in the pest's life cycle.
• Monitoring the orchard regularly and preserving populations of natural predators like lady beetles and parasitic wasps.
