Description
The European fruit lecanium (Parthenolecanium corni) is a scale insect belonging to the family Coccidae in the order Hemiptera. It is a significant pest known for damaging a wide range of woody plants by extracting sap, which weakens the host plant and inhibits its normal physiological development.
This pest affects a variety of plants including fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums, and peaches, as well as grapevines and various ornamental trees like maples and lindens. Its presence is often difficult to detect until significant damage has occurred.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. Second-instar nymphs overwinter on twigs or within bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding on young shoots, develop into adults, and eventually lay eggs under their protective test, which eventually hardens and covers the eggs.

Management strategies focus on dormant oil sprays to target overwintering nymphs and timely applications of systemic insecticides during the crawler stage in early summer. Integrated pest management also involves maintaining plant health through proper pruning and encouraging natural biological control agents like parasitic wasps and ladybird beetles.
