Description
The European peach scale (Parthenolecanium persicae) is a prominent member of the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. This sap-sucking insect is a serious pest that impacts a variety of fruit trees, including peaches, apricots, plums, and grapes, causing substantial economic losses in commercial and home orchards.
The biology of Parthenolecanium persicae is defined by a univoltine life cycle, meaning it produces one generation per year. The insect overwinters as second-instar nymphs on the bark of host twigs and branches. In early spring, these nymphs mature into adult females, which later lay hundreds of eggs under their protective coverings before the emergence of crawlers.
The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to nutrient depletion through continuous sap extraction. Affected trees exhibit stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and early leaf drop. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks the sunlight and disrupts the photosynthetic capacity of the plant's leaves.
High infestation levels severely weaken the host plant, rendering it susceptible to winter injury and opportunistic secondary infections. If left untreated, the cumulative damage over consecutive seasons leads to dieback of twigs and significant yield reduction, eventually threatening the survival of young, vulnerable fruit trees.
