Description
The Yew scale (Parthenolecanium pomeranicum) is a specialized insect pest of the Coccidae family that primarily affects yew trees. These sap-sucking insects can cause significant physiological stress to the host plant, often going unnoticed until the infection becomes severe.
While the yew tree is its primary host, this scale insect can occasionally be found on other related coniferous species in landscape plantings. They tend to cluster on the undersides of needles and young shoots, making visual inspection a critical part of maintaining plant health.
The life cycle involves one generation per year, with the insects overwintering as second-instar nymphs in crevices of the bark or near the needle bases. As temperatures rise in spring, they mature rapidly. By early summer, females lay eggs under their hardened, convex shells and then expire, leaving the next generation to emerge.
Damage caused by the Yew scale is multifaceted. Beyond the direct extraction of plant sap, which leads to yellowing and needle drop, the sticky honeydew secreted by the insects facilitates the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal covering hampers photosynthesis and significantly reduces the aesthetic value of the tree.
Effective management requires a proactive approach, including the pruning and disposal of heavily infested plant materials. Chemical control is most successful when timed correctly to coincide with the crawler stage, which is when the young nymphs are mobile and most susceptible to systemic or contact insecticides.
