Frosted scale
Parthenolecanium pruinosum
Description
The frosted scale (Parthenolecanium pruinosum) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. It primarily infests various coniferous trees, particularly spruces, although its host range can occasionally include certain deciduous trees in forest landscapes and urban environments.
The life cycle of this pest typically consists of one generation per year. It overwinters in the second instar larval stage, attached firmly to the bark of twigs and small branches. As temperatures rise in early spring, the nymphs resume feeding and develop into adult females, which mature and lay a large number of eggs beneath their protective covers by early summer.
Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues and extracting sap. This feeding process results in severe weakening of the tree, manifesting as yellowing and premature needle drop, branch dieback, and stunted shoot growth. Severe infestations significantly reduce the vigor of the tree, making it susceptible to secondary pests like wood-boring beetles.
A major indirect problem associated with the frosted scale is the production of honeydew. This sticky substance serves as a substrate for the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers needles and branches in a black layer. The mold hinders photosynthesis, further debilitating the plant and severely detracting from its aesthetic appeal.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to minimize population levels. Key actions include:
- Applying horticultural oils in early spring to smother overwintering nymphs.
- Timed applications of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence period.
- Pruning and removing heavily infested branches to reduce pest density.
- Enhancing tree vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization programs.
