Grapevine beetle

The grapevine beetle (genus Pelidnota) belongs to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. The most notable species, Pelidnota punctata, is well-documented in entomological literature as a beetle that can impact vineyard health. These insects are characterized by their distinct appearance and their habit of feeding on plant tissues during their adult stage.

These pests primarily target grapevines (Vitis species), as well as various deciduous trees. While they are often considered minor pests compared to other insects, under favorable environmental conditions, their population can increase, leading to visible damage on foliage. They are particularly attracted to weakened or poorly maintained plants in domestic gardens and vineyard borders.

The life cycle of the grapevine beetle includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage resides in decaying wood or in the soil, where they consume decaying organic matter. The adults emerge in summer, typically during the evenings. This transition from ground-dwelling larvae to foliage-feeding adults is a critical phase for monitoring and management.

Damage caused by the grapevine beetle manifests as irregular holes or skeletonization of the leaves. Adults feed on the leaf blades, which can disrupt the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively. While a single beetle does little damage, a heavy infestation can cause significant defoliation, particularly in young vines that are still establishing their canopy and root systems.

Control strategies for Pelidnota focus on both sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing rotting logs, stumps, and excessive leaf litter around the orchard is essential, as these serve as breeding grounds for the larvae. In instances of economic threshold breaches, chemical control with registered insecticides can be implemented to protect the foliage and ensure the health of the upcoming harvest.
