Spotted grapevine beetle

Pelidnota punctata

Description

The spotted grapevine beetle (Pelidnota punctata) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family, known for its distinct yellowish-brown elytra with black spots. It is primarily found in North America. This beetle is considered a sporadic pest that occasionally causes damage to both commercial and wild grapevine species, necessitating careful observation by growers.

The host plants are primarily species within the Vitis genus. Adult beetles are responsible for the damage, as they feed on the leaves of the grapevines. While they generally do not cause total crop failure, their feeding behavior can lead to significant defoliation, particularly in younger vineyards or poorly maintained sites where the canopy is already stressed.

The life cycle of the beetle is closely linked to decomposing wood. Females lay their eggs in decaying organic matter, such as old logs, stumps, or accumulated debris. Unlike some other scarab larvae that feed on living roots, the larvae of P. punctata feed exclusively on decaying wood and organic soil components, making them largely harmless to the root systems of healthy grapevines.

In terms of damage, adult beetles chew holes in leaves, often leading to a jagged, tattered appearance of the foliage. In cases of severe infestations, the cumulative loss of photosynthetic area can weaken the vines, potentially reducing fruit set and vine vigor for the following season. Growers should note that beetles are most active during the summer months.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for controlling this beetle include:

  • Removing rotting logs, stumps, and excessive wood debris from the vineyard perimeter.
  • Hand-picking adults from vines during the evening, when they are most active.
  • Monitoring with light traps to detect population spikes before widespread damage occurs.
  • Applying registered insecticides only when populations reach an economic threshold.

Prevention remains the most effective management tool. By maintaining a clean environment and ensuring that no significant sources of decomposing wood remain near the vines, growers can naturally suppress the local population of the spotted grapevine beetle. Regular scouting is essential to determine if intervention is required to protect the vine canopy during critical growth phases.
