Description
The Coulee cricket (scientific name Peranabrus scabricollis) is a flightless, robust insect belonging to the family Tettigoniidae. Unlike many other grasshoppers, it possesses a distinctively rugged appearance and is restricted to ground-based movement, which influences its dispersal patterns and population dynamics in agricultural landscapes.
This species is a significant pest of various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats, as well as rangeland vegetation. It often gathers in massive migratory bands, moving across fields and causing severe defoliation and direct damage to developing grain heads, significantly impacting yield quality and quantity.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Eggs are typically laid in the soil during the late summer and undergo diapause throughout the winter. Hatching occurs in early spring as soil temperatures rise. Nymphs undergo several instars before molting into flightless adults, which remain active through the summer months.
Damage caused by the Coulee cricket is characterized by jagged, uneven feeding patterns on leaves and stalks. Due to their gregarious behavior, high-density populations can strip a field of vegetation in a very short time. Furthermore, they are opportunistic feeders and may exhibit cannibalism or scavenge organic matter if fresh green vegetation is scarce.
Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to reduce population outbreaks. Effective control includes physical disturbance of egg-laying sites via tillage and the application of contact-residual insecticides during the early nymphal stages. Monitoring population levels through field scouting is critical to implementing timely interventions before large-scale crop loss occurs.
