Petrusa
Petrusa
Description
Petrusa is a genus of small insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. In agricultural practice, this pest poses a significant threat to a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops, feeding on plant sap and disrupting essential physiological processes, which often leads to reduced yields and plant decline.
The pest primarily targets fruit trees, berry shrubs, and certain vegetable and industrial crops. Due to their high mobility, the adults quickly disperse throughout the field or orchard, which makes locating infestation sites difficult and requires a comprehensive monitoring program throughout the entire growing season.
The biological cycle of Petrusa consists of several developmental stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Both adults and nymphs lead a concealed lifestyle, feeding on the undersides of leaves or on tender young shoots. Overwintering most commonly occurs in the egg stage, deposited under the bark or within the tissue of young stems, which ensures high survival rates during colder periods.
The primary damage symptoms include plant exhaustion due to the extraction of vital sap. Leaves often develop chlorotic spots, margins curl and dry out, and secondary fungal infections may develop at the puncture sites. Furthermore, these insects are potential vectors for phytoplasmas and various plant viruses, which significantly increases their economic impact on crop production.
Effective control measures combine both agrotechnical and chemical strategies. Regular sanitary pruning and the destruction of plant debris, where the pests may deposit eggs, are essential. When the economic threshold is reached, the application of systemic or contact-stomach insecticides, effective against sucking insects, is recommended, provided that all application regulations and safety intervals are strictly followed.
