Italian spittlebug

The Philaenus italosignus is a species of spittlebug belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. This insect is primarily recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its role in the transmission of plant pathogens. It is morphologically similar to other members of the genus, but it possesses distinct ecological requirements and host plant preferences.

The pest predominantly infests plants within the Asphodelus genus and various wild herbaceous species. However, when these host plants are abundant in the vicinity of agricultural fields, the insect may migrate to valuable crops. It has been documented as a transmitter of Xylella fastidiosa, a highly destructive bacterium responsible for plant diseases that can devastate orchards and vineyards. Beyond pathogen transmission, the insects cause direct damage by feeding on plant sap, leading to wilting and stunted growth.
