Maghreb spittlebug

The Maghreb spittlebug (Philaenus maghresignus) is a member of the Aphrophoridae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is a significant agricultural pest, closely related to the meadow spittlebug, with a distribution primarily centered in Mediterranean regions and North Africa.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. It is commonly found on vineyards, olive groves, various fruit trees, and many herbaceous plants. Due to its broad host range, it poses a recurring threat to both horticultural and field crops throughout the growing season.

The biology of Philaenus maghresignus is characterized by overwintering as eggs. Upon hatching, the nymphs begin feeding and produce a distinct foam-like substance, commonly referred to as "cuckoo spit." This foam serves as a vital microhabitat, protecting the developing nymphs from desiccation, predators, and extreme temperatures.

Damage is caused both directly and indirectly. Direct damage occurs when nymphs and adults suck sap from the plant's xylem, leading to stunted growth and leaf wilting. Indirectly, they are recognized as major vectors of plant diseases, most notably Xylella fastidiosa, a pathogen that causes severe decline and death in numerous economically important plant species.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies involve weed control, as weeds serve as crucial reservoirs for nymphs, and the timely application of insecticides during the nymphal stage. Monitoring adult populations with sticky traps is also essential for determining the need for chemical intervention.
