Description

The Drinker moth (Philudoria potatoria) is a member of the Lasiocampidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This nocturnal moth is widely distributed across Europe and temperate Asia, typically inhabiting damp meadows, wetland edges, and dense thickets where its host plants are abundant.

The larvae are known for their polyphagous feeding habits. While they prefer wild grasses and reeds, they often infest berry crops like raspberries and blackberries when such plantations are established in close proximity to the insect's natural marshy or woodland habitats.

The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in a semi-dormant state within leaf litter or at the base of stems. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding, grow rapidly, and pupate inside distinctive, spindle-shaped cocoons attached to plants during mid-summer.

The damage caused by the larvae involves defoliation of the host plants. In severe infestations, the caterpillars can consume almost the entire foliage of a raspberry bush, which stresses the plant, reduces its vigor, and leads to a measurable decrease in fruit production for the season.
