Systematic Position: The Drinker moth (Philudoria potatoria) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae. It is a well-known species frequently found in damp habitats across Europe and parts of Asia, recognized for its distinct life cycle patterns.

Affected Crops: Primarily, the larvae feed on various grasses and reeds. However, in agricultural settings, they can become pests on brambles, raspberries, and blackberries. They are considered opportunistic feeders, capable of attacking a diverse range of herbaceous plants and shrubs depending on the availability of their primary host plants.

Biology and Life Cycle: The species produces one generation annually. The winter is spent in the larval stage, usually as second or third instar caterpillars hidden near the base of plants or in leaf litter. In the spring, they resume feeding, grow rapidly, and pupate in characteristic, spindle-shaped, tough yellow cocoons attached to stems. Adult moths emerge in mid-summer, typically from July onwards.

Nature of Damage and Economic Importance: The damage is caused by the caterpillars, which are foliage feeders. They consume leaf margins or the entire leaf blade, leading to defoliation. High larval density can lead to severe stress for young berry bushes, reducing their vigor and the quality of the harvest, which carries economic consequences for commercial growers.
