Description
The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus) is a significant pest belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. These small beetles are notorious for their ability to infest and kill various coniferous species, particularly those in the Cupressaceae family.
The primary hosts of this pest include cypress, arborvitae (Thuja), juniper, and false cypress trees. While the beetle often targets trees weakened by drought, disease, or mechanical damage, healthy specimens can also fall victim if the beetle population reaches high levels.
The biology of Phloeosinus is complex: adults bore into the bark to construct egg galleries. The larvae then hatch and tunnel through the phloem and cambium, effectively girdling the branches or trunk. This disruption of the nutrient transport system leads to rapid decline and death of the plant parts above the infestation.
Damage symptoms usually include yellowing needles, browning of foliage, and localized dieback of branches. If left unchecked, the beetle can cause systemic damage across entire landscapes, significantly reducing the aesthetic value and vitality of the affected plantings.
