Cypress bark beetle

Systematic position. The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus acatayi) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest that has adapted to thrive within the tissues of coniferous plants, particularly those belonging to the Cupressaceae family.

Host plants. The primary hosts for feeding and reproduction include species within the genera Cupressus (cypress), Thuja (thuja), Juniperus (juniper), and Chamaecyparis (false cypress). The beetle typically targets trees that are stressed, recently transplanted, or suffering from moisture deficiency, though it can infest healthy specimens during population outbreaks.

Biology and life cycle. The insect's life cycle is closely tied to the physiological condition of the conifer's bark and phloem. Adult beetles engage in maturation feeding on young shoots before moving to the trunk to excavate egg galleries. Females deposit eggs under the bark, and the emerging larvae bore radial galleries that disrupt the vascular flow of the host tree.

Nature of damage and impact. The damage is twofold: adults prune young twigs, leading to flagging and branch dieback, while larvae damage the inner bark layer. Infested trees lose their aesthetic value, suffer from stunted growth, and in cases of severe infestation, the entire crown may desiccate, leading to the death of the tree within a few seasons.

Protection measures. Controlling this pest requires an integrated management strategy involving both cultural and chemical practices:

• Pruning and destroying infested or dead branches to reduce the beetle population.
• Ensuring optimal tree health through regular irrigation and fertilization.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak spring flight period.
• Utilizing pheromone traps for monitoring and identifying population spikes.
