Systematic position
The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus armatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized pest known for targeting various coniferous trees, operating largely under the bark to remain protected from predators and external environmental factors.

Host plants
This pest primarily attacks species within the Cupressaceae family. Key hosts include cypress (Cupressus), juniper (Juniperus), thuja (Thuja), and false cypress (Chamaecyparis). The beetle often selects weakened, stressed, or recently transplanted trees, which lack the sap pressure necessary to defend against colonization.

Biology and life cycle
Adults are small, dark beetles that emerge in the spring. They bore galleries beneath the bark, where females lay eggs along the sides. Once hatched, larvae feed on the cambium and phloem layers. The development cycle includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages, often resulting in multiple overlapping generations per year depending on the regional climate.

Damage and economic importance
Damage is two-fold: adult beetles feed on the bark of young shoots, causing flagging or dieback of twigs. Simultaneously, larval galleries under the bark of the main stem disrupt the tree's vascular system. This interference with water and nutrient transport causes the foliage to turn brown and leads to the eventual death of the affected plant.

Control measures
Management relies on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies:

• Prompt removal and destruction of infested branches or dying trees to prevent population spread.
• Maintaining tree vigor through consistent irrigation and proper soil fertilization to increase resistance.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight season to prevent new attacks.
• Use of pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle activity and time control actions effectively.
