Cypress bark beetle

The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus aubei) is a destructive pest of coniferous trees, belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. This small beetle is widely recognized for its impact on various ornamental conifers, often causing significant aesthetic and structural damage in both landscape settings and commercial tree nurseries.

This species primarily targets plants within the Cupressaceae family, including cypress (Cupressus), false cypress (Chamaecyparis), arborvitae (Thuja), and juniper (Juniperus). While the beetle is often attracted to stressed or weakened trees due to drought or poor maintenance, dense populations can easily colonize healthy specimens, leading to widespread damage across a landscape.

The beetle's life cycle is closely linked to seasonal temperature changes. Adults and larvae typically overwinter under the bark of infested branches. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge and begin feeding on young shoots, which leads to characteristic wilting and browning of the branch tips. This feeding phase is critical for the insect's maturation and subsequent mating.

The damage caused by Phloeosinus aubei is twofold: direct feeding damage to tender shoots and the construction of galleries under the bark by larvae. These larval galleries disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the transport of water and essential nutrients. Consequently, infested branches die back, and severe infestations can weaken or even kill the entire host tree.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include the immediate removal and destruction of infested branches to reduce the beetle population. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization is crucial for natural defense. In cases of significant infestation, targeted applications of systemic insecticides during the beetle's peak flight period can effectively manage the population and prevent further spread.
