Camphor bark beetle

The camphor bark beetle (Phloeosinus camphoratus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily. This beetle is a significant pest primarily targeting members of the Cupressaceae family, including various species of cypress, juniper, arborvitae, and other ornamental conifers found in urban and forest landscapes.

The biology and lifecycle of this insect are highly dependent on the host tree's health and environmental conditions. Adult beetles typically overwinter inside galleries bored into the bark or wood. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge to feed on healthy or stressed twigs and small branches, a process known as maturation feeding, which precedes the mating and egg-laying phase.

Damage patterns are distinctive and often involve the girdling of twigs, which leads to sudden flagging or wilting of the foliage. Entry holes on the bark, accompanied by resin exudation (sap bleeding), are common signs of infestation. Over time, the cumulative impact of these galleries disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the vascular system of the host plant.

In terms of economic and ecological significance, the beetle can cause severe decline in coniferous plantations and landscape hedges. Weakened trees are particularly susceptible to large-scale attacks. Furthermore, the boring activities create entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi, which can accelerate the death of branches or the entire tree if the beetle population remains unchecked.

Control measures require a combination of preventative care and direct intervention. Implementing strict sanitation by pruning and destroying infested wood is crucial to reduce the population. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and mulching makes plants less attractive to the pest. During peak emergence periods, applying registered contact or systemic insecticides can protect high-value specimens from new infestations.
