Cedar bark beetle

Systematic position: Phloeosinus cedri belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae (bark beetles). This beetle is recognized as a significant pest, specifically adapted to colonizing and feeding on various species of conifer trees.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets trees in the Cupressaceae family, including genera such as Cupressus (cypress), Juniperus (juniper), and Cedrus (cedar). It is particularly detrimental in urban landscapes, botanical gardens, and forest nurseries where host trees are subjected to environmental stress.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Phloeosinus cedri is closely synchronized with the seasonal growth of the host plant. Adults emerge in spring to locate suitable hosts. After mating, females excavate egg galleries under the bark. The larvae then hatch and tunnel through the phloem, effectively feeding on the tree's vascular tissue before pupating and emerging as adults.

Character of damage and economic importance: The damage is twofold: adults cause tip-dieback by feeding on small branches, while larval galleries girdle the stems and branches. This interrupts the flow of water and nutrients, causing the foliage to turn yellow and necrotic. Severe infestations lead to extensive branch death and can eventually kill the entire host tree.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. This includes immediate removal and destruction of infested wood to disrupt the life cycle. Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization is a critical preventative measure. In cases of high infestation, professional application of systemic insecticides during adult flight periods can be effective.
