Description

The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus perlatus) is a significant pest belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically within the Scolytinae subfamily. It is recognized for causing substantial physiological damage to various coniferous species, particularly in urban landscapes and nurseries.

Its primary host range includes trees within the Cupressaceae family, such as cypress (Cupressus), arborvitae (Thuja), and juniper (Juniperus). While it often targets drought-stressed or otherwise weakened trees, healthy specimens are also susceptible under high pest pressure conditions.

The beetle's life cycle is completed within the inner bark and phloem of the host tree. Adult females bore tunnels where they lay eggs. The larvae subsequently feed on the phloem layer, creating extensive gallery systems that disrupt the transport of nutrients and water throughout the branches or trunk.

Visible symptoms of infestation include the presence of pitch tubes on the bark, chlorosis (yellowing) of the foliage, sudden wilting of branches, and crown dieback. If left unmanaged, the cumulative damage can lead to the death of the entire tree or individual branches.

Integrated pest management is the most effective approach. This includes proper pruning of infested branches, improving tree vigor through irrigation and fertilization, and applying chemical treatments during the peak adult flight period. Monitoring using traps can help time applications for maximum efficacy.
