Description

The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus rudis) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This small, cylindrical beetle is a significant pest that specifically targets coniferous trees, often causing severe economic and aesthetic damage to landscaping and forest ecosystems.

Its host range primarily includes members of the Cupressaceae family, such as Cupressus, Juniperus, and Thuja. The beetle is particularly attracted to trees that are already stressed due to drought, physical damage, or poor site conditions. However, during outbreaks, even healthy trees can be colonized and eventually killed by mass attacks.

The biological life cycle of the beetle involves the adult female boring into the bark to create galleries where eggs are laid. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the inner bark, specifically the cambium and phloem layers. These galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water within the tree, causing the tissue to die and eventually leading to the death of the infested branch or the entire tree.

Symptoms of an infestation include the yellowing and subsequent browning of foliage, wilting of shoots, and the presence of small, circular emergence holes on the bark. Tiny piles of frass, resembling sawdust, may also be visible near the base of the tree or on the surface of the bark, indicating active tunneling by the larvae.
