Description

The Sequoia bark beetle (Phloeosinus sequoiae) is a specialized pest of coniferous trees belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. This insect poses a significant threat to ornamental and forest stands, as it quickly colonizes weakened host trees, leading to rapid decline.

The primary host plants damaged by this species are members of the Cupressaceae family. This includes, first and foremost, Sequoia and Sequoiadendron, as well as various species of Cypress (Cupressus), Juniper (Juniperus), and Thuja (Thuja). The pest particularly thrives on trees stressed by drought, mechanical injury, or recent transplanting.

The biological development cycle of the beetle is closely tied to the condition of the host plant's bark and phloem. Adult females bore into the inner bark to create egg galleries. Upon hatching, the larvae construct individual tunnels as they feed on the phloem tissue. Depending on local climate conditions, the insect can complete one or more generations per year.

The damage caused by Phloeosinus sequoiae is characterized by numerous small emergence holes in the bark and the subsequent wilting and death of twigs or the entire tree. The harmful impact includes both the mechanical destruction of the cambium and phloem by larvae and the transmission of fungal pathogens that accelerate the death of the tree.

Control measures involve a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key practices include:

  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
  • Sanitary pruning and removal of infested branches or dead trees.
