Description
The Shensi cypress beetle (Phloeosinus shensi) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This small beetle is a specialized pest that primarily infests plants of the Cupressaceae family, including Thuja, Juniper, and Chamaecyparis species.
The life cycle of this insect follows a distinct seasonal pattern. Adult beetles overwinter in galleries bored into the bark or wood. As temperatures rise in spring, they begin a period of maturation feeding before laying eggs in weakened or stressed trees.
Damage is characterized by beetles tunneling beneath the bark and feeding on young shoots. This activity disrupts the vascular system, leading to the desiccation of individual branches, needle yellowing, and eventually the death of the entire tree if the infestation becomes severe.
Infestation is often identified by the presence of small entry holes on the bark and piles of frass (sawdust). Regular monitoring of tree health is crucial, especially during drought conditions, as stressed conifers are the primary targets for these pests.
