Cypress bark beetle

Systematic position. The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus sinensis) belongs to the order Coleoptera, the family Curculionidae, and the subfamily Scolytinae. It is a highly specialized wood-boring insect that targets members of the Cupressaceae family, causing significant economic and aesthetic losses in forestry and landscape gardening.

Host cultures. The primary targets for this pest are species within the genera Cupressus (cypress), Thuja (thuja), Chamaecyparis (false cypress), and Juniperus (juniper). The beetle prefers weakened, stressed, or recently transplanted trees, though it can also infest healthy trees when population densities are high.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. These beetles spend the majority of their lives protected under the bark of host trees. Adults emerge during the warm season to feed and mate, creating egg galleries where females deposit eggs. Larvae hatch and consume the cambium layer, which is essential for tree growth.

Character of damage and harmfulness. Adults cause "twig boring," where they tunnel into small branches, causing them to wilt and break off. The most severe damage is caused by the larval galleries under the bark, which effectively girdle the stem and cut off the translocation of nutrients and water. This often results in extensive crown dieback and the death of the host tree.

Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

• Sanitation pruning: removal and disposal of infested branches and trees to reduce the beetle population.
• Cultural practices: maintaining plant vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to increase tree resistance.
• Chemical control: applying systemic insecticides during the peak flight of adults to prevent new infestations.
• Monitoring: utilizing pheromone-based traps to track population spikes and timing intervention.
