Description
The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus swainei) is a small coleopteran belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly those within the Cupressaceae family, causing aesthetic and structural damage in landscaping and nurseries.
The primary hosts of this beetle include species of the genus Cupressus, Juniperus, and Thuja. These beetles are attracted to stressed trees, including those suffering from drought, poor irrigation, or physical trauma, which lowers the natural defense mechanisms of the host plant against insect colonization.
The life cycle involves the female boring into the inner bark to excavate maternal galleries, where eggs are deposited. Upon hatching, the larvae construct distinct galleries, feeding on the phloem and cambium layer. After pupation, the emerging adults often perform maturation feeding on small shoots before seeking new hosts to repeat the cycle.
Damage is characterized by branch flagging, thinning of the canopy, and the presence of small, rounded entry/exit holes on the bark surface. Larval feeding disrupts the vascular system, while adult feeding on twig terminals causes the tips of the branches to wilt and die, significantly degrading the tree's health and appearance.
