Cypress bark beetle

Systematic position. The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus tacubayae) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized forest pest known for targeting various coniferous species, primarily within the cypress family.

Host plants. This pest primarily infests plants of the Cupressaceae family. It is commonly found on cypress (Cupressus), juniper (Juniperus), and arborvitae (Thuja). The beetle prefers trees that are already stressed due to drought, soil compaction, or poor maintenance, but it can also attack healthy trees when population densities are high.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves adult beetles boring into the bark to construct nuptial chambers and egg galleries. Eggs are laid along the gallery walls. After hatching, the larvae feed on the phloem and inner bark, creating tunnels that disrupt the tree's vascular system. Development is highly dependent on environmental temperature.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Damage is caused by both adults and larvae. Adults may feed on twigs, leading to branch tip dieback, while larvae create extensive galleries that girdle the stems and branches. Symptoms include wilting foliage, resin exudation from entrance holes, and overall crown thinning. Severe infestations can kill the entire tree.

Control measures. Effective management starts with cultural practices such as maintaining tree vigor through irrigation and pruning. Infested branches should be removed and destroyed immediately to break the beetle's life cycle. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight periods of the adults to prevent new attacks.
