Juniper bark beetle

The juniper bark beetle (Phloeosinus thujae) is a small wood-boring insect belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly affecting those in the Cupressaceae family, causing structural and physiological damage to plants.

The main host plants for this beetle include various species of thuja, juniper, cypress, and false cypress. While the insect often targets trees already stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or mechanical injury, high population densities allow it to successfully attack healthy, vigorous trees as well.

The life cycle of the beetle is deeply integrated into the host tree's anatomy. Females bore into the bark to create galleries where they lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the cambium and inner bark, constructing tunnels that disrupt the transport of nutrients and water throughout the plant tissue.

The damage caused by Phloeosinus thujae is characterized by the sudden browning and death of twigs or entire branches. Infested areas typically show small entrance holes in the bark accompanied by fine sawdust or "frass." The beetle's activity weakens the tree's defense systems, often creating entry points for opportunistic fungal pathogens.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach centered on tree health. Sanitation is paramount: all dead or infested branches should be pruned and destroyed immediately to break the breeding cycle. In high-risk areas, chemical control using systemic insecticides applied during the peak flight of adult beetles is recommended to mitigate further infestation.
