Cypress bark beetle

The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus variolatus) is a destructive species of the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to various coniferous trees, specifically those belonging to the Cupressaceae family. Because of its cryptic behavior, it can significantly compromise the structure and health of ornamental gardens and forested areas.

This pest mainly targets species like cypress (Cupressus), arborvitae (Thuja), and juniper (Juniperus). It tends to infest stressed or weakened specimens, such as those suffering from drought, poor soil conditions, or recent transplantation shock. In dense urban landscapes, these beetles can easily move from infected trees to healthy ones, creating localized outbreaks.

The life cycle of Phloeosinus variolatus involves the adult beetles boring into the bark to create breeding galleries. The females lay eggs in these tunnels, and the emerging larvae feed on the cambium layer. Depending on the local climate and temperature, the beetle can complete one or more generations throughout the growing season, which allows the population to expand rapidly.

The primary indicators of infestation are structural damage to the bark and the plant's vascular system.

• Small, circular entrance holes on the trunk and stems.
• Accumulation of fine, reddish-brown boring dust (frass) at the base of the plant.
• Yellowing or sudden wilting of branches, often leading to tip dieback.
• General decline in plant vigor, leading to eventual tree mortality if untreated.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. The most critical step is the removal and destruction of infested branches or entire trees to reduce the beetle population. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization is vital for natural defense. During the peak flight periods, chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides can be applied to target adults before they bore into the bark.
