Description

The olive bark beetle, scientifically classified as Phloeotribus scarabaeoides, is a destructive pest belonging to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. It is specifically recognized for its impact on olive groves, causing significant agricultural losses by tunneling into the branches and trunks of host trees, leading to severe physiological stress.

The beetle primarily attacks olive trees, showing a strong preference for trees that are already weakened by drought, poor soil nutrition, or previous mechanical injuries. However, in high-density populations, the pest can successfully colonize healthy, vigorous trees, making it a persistent challenge for olive growers worldwide.

The biological cycle of this beetle is tightly linked to the temperature of the environment. The insect typically undergoes two generations annually. Adult beetles emerge from their overwintering galleries in early spring to initiate new breeding sites. The females bore galleries beneath the bark, where they deposit eggs, and the resulting larvae continue the damage by consuming the inner bark layer.

The damage caused by Phloeotribus is characterized by small, circular entrance holes on the surface of young twigs and branches. As the larvae feed, they create complex networks of tunnels that disrupt the transport of water and nutrients, resulting in the wilting of foliage, branch dieback, and a reduction in fruit yield.
