Peach bark beetle

Phloeotribus liminaris

Description

The Peach bark beetle (Phloeotribus liminaris) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. This tiny beetle, characterized by a brownish body approximately 2 mm in length, poses a significant threat to the health of stone fruit crops, particularly in regions with warmer climates.

Primary hosts for this pest include peach, cherry, plum, apricot, and almond trees. The insect typically targets weakened or stressed trees, but during periods of high population density, it can mass-attack seemingly healthy orchards, causing severe damage that may lead to the death of individual branches or even the entire tree.

The biological cycle of the beetle involves overwintering as adults beneath the bark or in specialized galleries. As temperatures rise in spring, the beetles emerge and feed by boring into the base of buds and small twigs. Females lay eggs under the bark, where the emerging larvae construct intricate winding galleries, disrupting the tree's vascular system and nutrient flow.

A hallmark of infestation is the appearance of numerous small, shot-hole-like perforations on the bark, often accompanied by gumming (gummosis). Infested trees exhibit signs of stress, such as premature leaf yellowing, wilting, and dieback of young shoots. Extensive damage to the cambium layer leads to necrosis and a rapid decline in the tree's overall vigor.

  • Remove and burn infested branches immediately.
  • Maintain orchard health through proper irrigation and fertilization.
  • Monitor adult flight periods using pheromone or sticky traps.
  • Apply targeted insecticides during peak activity before egg-laying occurs.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control. Sanitation is the most critical step, requiring the removal of infested wood to reduce population reservoirs. Chemical intervention should be timed precisely with the beetle's activity cycles to prevent the establishment of new galleries, ensuring that healthy trees remain protected throughout the growing season.
