Olive bark beetle

The olive bark beetle (Phloeotribus scarabaeoides) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family, specifically the Scolytinae subfamily. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting olive groves across the Mediterranean basin and other olive-growing regions worldwide.

The primary host for this beetle is the olive tree (Olea europaea). While it shows a strong preference for olives, it can occasionally infest related species within the Oleaceae family, such as ash trees, especially when the olive trees are not available or are in a state of poor physiological health.

The life cycle of the beetle is closely tied to the availability of suitable woody tissue. Adults overwinter in galleries bored into the bark of small branches or twigs. In early spring, the beetles emerge to colonize new shoots or pruning wood to feed and breed. The species typically produces two to three generations per year depending on the regional climate.

The damage caused by the olive bark beetle is twofold: adult beetles create feeding galleries at the base of fruit-bearing twigs, leading to breakage and reduced fruit set, while larvae develop galleries under the bark, disrupting nutrient transport. Heavy infestations often cause premature wilting, limb dieback, and significantly lower yields.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for control. The most effective cultural practice is the removal and burning or shredding of pruning wood, which serves as a major breeding site. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization is crucial for building resistance. Insecticides should be used cautiously, primarily targeting the adult emergence periods.
