Green leaf weevil
Phyllobius viridicollis
Description
The green leaf weevil (Phyllobius viridicollis) is a member of the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is easily identified by its metallic green or golden-green scales that cover the elytra, providing excellent camouflage against vegetation. The adults are typically 5–7 mm long and possess the characteristic snout typical of all true weevils.
This insect acts as a significant pest for various horticultural and agricultural crops. It commonly infests fruit trees, including pome and stone fruits, as well as various berry bushes. In addition to orchards, the pest can be found on ornamental plants and wild forest trees, making it a versatile threat in nurseries and forest plantations.
The biological cycle of the green leaf weevil is characterized by a long larval stage that occurs underground. Larvae overwinter in the soil, feeding on plant roots. In the spring, they pupate and emerge as adults. The adult beetles are active mainly during late spring and early summer, when they climb onto foliage to feed and reproduce, completing one generation per year.
Damage caused by this species is primarily associated with the adult feeding stage. Weevils chew irregular notches into the edges of leaves, which can result in severe defoliation if infestation levels are high. Such damage reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which can stunt young trees and significantly impact the overall health and yield of mature orchard crops.
Effective pest management involves both preventive and corrective measures. Cultivation and soil tillage help disrupt the larval stage by exposing them to predators. During the adult emergence phase, monitoring is crucial; if numbers exceed threshold levels, systemic or contact insecticides are typically applied to protect the foliage and prevent further reproductive cycles.
