Phyllognathus is a genus of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae family) within the order Coleoptera. The most notable species is Phyllognathus excavatus, often recognized for its unique morphology in the adult stage. While typically found in warmer climates, these beetles can become significant pests in various agricultural settings, particularly where soil organic matter is abundant.

The larvae of Phyllognathus are the primary cause of damage to crops. They live underground, consuming organic matter but also feeding on the root systems of vegetables, cereals, and industrial crops. This root-pruning activity often leads to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the complete death of the plants, particularly affecting seedlings and young nursery stock.

The life cycle of this pest involves a complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in the summer months for mating and egg-laying. The larvae undergo several developmental stages while dwelling in the soil. They are highly dependent on the presence of decaying organic matter, which makes fields with high manure application or crop residue accumulation particularly susceptible to infestation.

In terms of damage, the activity of the larvae is frequently localized in patches within a field. Cultural methods include deep autumn plowing to disrupt the habitat of larvae and pupae and the removal of excessive organic debris that attracts ovipositing females. If the population density exceeds economic thresholds, the application of soil-applied insecticides during planting can provide effective control and minimize crop loss.
