Description
Systematic position: Phyllognathus dionysius is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Within this large family, it belongs to the subfamily Dynastinae, known commonly as rhinoceros or dung beetles, characterized by their robust bodies and specific horn-like projections in males.
Host crops: This pest is polyphagous, capable of feeding on a wide range of agricultural and horticultural plants. Its larvae are particularly problematic for young seedlings, row crops, vegetable gardens, and tree nurseries, where they concentrate their feeding activity in the rhizosphere of the plants.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Phyllognathus dionysius is completed through a complex process of metamorphosis within the soil profile. Adults emerge in warmer months to mate, after which females deposit eggs in soil enriched with organic matter. The larvae (grubs) remain underground, feeding on roots and organic debris, passing through several instars before pupating.
