Description
The garden chafer (Phyllopertha horticola) is a coleopteran pest belonging to the Scarabaeidae family. It is a well-known beetle that affects a wide variety of plants during its adult stage, while its larvae stage causes hidden damage beneath the soil surface.
This pest infests diverse crops, including fruit trees, roses, strawberries, and various cereals. Adult beetles are primarily folivorous, skeletonizing leaves, while the larvae, commonly known as white grubs, dwell in the soil and feed on the roots of grasses and young crops, causing significant structural stress to the plant root systems.
The biological cycle of the garden chafer usually spans one or two years. Females deposit eggs in grassy or cultivated soils. The resulting larvae overwinter in the soil at various depths.
