Description
The garden chafer (Phyllopertha horticola) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is a small beetle, typically measuring about 10–12 mm, recognized by its metallic green or bronze-colored head and thorax, combined with reddish-brown elytra. These beetles are highly active on warm, sunny days and are frequently found in gardens, orchards, and meadows across temperate regions.
This species is a generalist herbivore, impacting a wide variety of plants. Adult beetles feed on the foliage of various fruit trees, including apple, cherry, and plum, as well as roses and other ornamental shrubs. However, it is the larvae, known as white grubs, that cause the most significant economic loss. They dwell underground, feeding on the roots of turf grasses, vegetables, strawberries, and young tree seedlings, leading to severe plant damage.
The life cycle of the garden chafer spans one year. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or early summer, typically peaking in June. After mating, females burrow into the soil to deposit eggs. The larvae develop through three stages over the summer months, growing rapidly by consuming organic matter and plant roots. As temperatures drop in the autumn, they descend deeper into the soil to overwinter, pupating the following spring before emerging as new adults.
The damage caused by these insects is dual-faceted. Adult beetles create unsightly holes in leaves, which, if the infestation is severe, can lead to significant defoliation and stress for the trees. The subterranean damage from larvae is often more destructive; by pruning the root systems, they cause the turf or crop to turn brown and die. In severe cases, large patches of grass can be easily lifted from the soil, indicating heavy grub infestation.
Effective management requires an integrated approach that addresses both the adult and larval stages. Cultivation practices, such as soil aeration or deep digging, can physically disturb and reduce larval populations. During the adult flight period, insecticides can be applied to trees to limit egg-laying. Furthermore, biological control methods, including the application of entomopathogenic nematodes or Beauveria bassiana fungi, have proven to be environmentally friendly and successful alternatives to traditional chemical pesticides.
