Description

Phyllophaga is a large genus of beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. Known commonly as May beetles or June bugs, they are significant agricultural pests worldwide. The genus includes numerous species, and their larvae, often referred to as white grubs, cause extensive damage to the root systems of various crops, making them a primary concern for integrated pest management programs.

The host range for Phyllophaga is extremely wide. They attack turfgrass, cereal crops, vegetable crops such as potatoes and corn, and the root systems of nursery stock and young fruit trees. While adults cause aesthetic or physiological damage to foliage by feeding, the primary economic loss is attributed to the subterranean larval stage, which feeds voraciously on roots.

The biological cycle of Phyllophaga is complex and typically spans two to four years, depending on the species and environmental conditions. Larvae pass through three instars while remaining in the soil profile. They move vertically in the soil to avoid extreme temperatures, but during the growing season, they are usually found in the top 10–20 cm of the soil, feeding on organic matter and living roots.

The damage caused by these insects is often insidious because it occurs below the soil surface. Feeding destroys root systems, leading to reduced nutrient uptake, stunted growth, and death of the plant. In extreme infestations, large patches of crops can be destroyed, necessitating re-seeding or significant remedial measures to protect remaining healthy plants.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention techniques. Growers should prioritize the following strategies to reduce larval populations in the soil:

  • Cultural practices like deep tillage to disrupt the soil environment and expose larvae to predators.
  • Application of soil-applied insecticides specifically targeted at the larval root-feeding stage.
  • Use of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic nematodes (e.g., Heterorhabditis spp.).
  • Monitoring adult flight periods with light traps to predict potential infestation intensity for the following season.
  • Maintaining healthy soil organic matter levels to keep plants vigorous enough to withstand minor feeding.
