Systematic position
The Antiguan June beetle (Phyllophaga antiguae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is part of the extensive Phyllophaga genus, commonly known as May or June beetles. These insects are significant agricultural pests in regions where they establish, due to the high consumption rate of their larvae on plant roots.

Host crops
The larvae of this beetle are generalist root feeders. They cause severe damage to a variety of essential crops, including sugarcane, sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas), cassava, and various vegetable crops. Additionally, fruit trees and nursery stocks are frequently attacked, making this pest a significant concern for both large-scale commercial farmers and local agricultural producers.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle involves metamorphosis through egg, larva (grub), pupa, and adult stages. Adults are nocturnal, often feeding on foliage before mating. Eggs are laid in moist soil where the larvae hatch and begin feeding on organic matter and living roots. The larval stage is long-lasting, often remaining in the soil for several months or even years, which complicates timing for targeted control measures.

Nature of damage and harmfulness
The primary damage is caused by the soil-dwelling larvae, which feed on root hairs and larger root systems. This feeding leads to plant wilting, stunted growth, and death, as the plant can no longer effectively uptake water and nutrients. Secondary infections, such as root rot, often occur through the wounds created by the larvae, further exacerbating the damage and leading to significant harvest losses.
