Phyllophaga setifera is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This species is widely recognized as a significant soil-dwelling pest. Known commonly as a type of white grub, its larvae are highly destructive to the root systems of various field crops, pasture grasses, and nursery stock, representing a major challenge for agricultural productivity.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including corn, small grains, potatoes, and various vegetable crops. While adult beetles may feed on the foliage of trees and shrubs, the primary agricultural concern is the larval stage. Larvae live underground and feed aggressively on roots, often causing severe reductions in stand density and yield quality across affected areas.

The life cycle of the species encompasses egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larval development period is typically long, lasting several years depending on soil temperature and humidity. During this period, larvae migrate vertically through the soil profile to find suitable environmental conditions, which makes monitoring and managing their population levels particularly complex.

Damage symptoms often appear as chlorosis, wilting, and sudden death of plants. Because the larvae consume the root system, plants are unable to absorb sufficient water and nutrients. In field settings, this leads to patchy crop growth and, in severe cases, the complete loss of plant patches, requiring immediate intervention to prevent further economic losses.
