Phyllophaga vandinei beetle

Phyllophaga vandinei is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. These beetles are widely recognized in agricultural entomology as members of the "white grub" complex, which are among the most destructive soil-dwelling pests affecting agriculture across the Americas and the Caribbean.

This pest affects a diverse range of host plants. Economically significant crops such as sugarcane, various vegetable crops, turfgrass, and ornamental nursery stocks are particularly susceptible. The larvae live underground, often feeding on roots for multiple years before reaching the adult stage, which allows them to build up substantial population densities over time.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults, commonly known as May or June beetles, emerge to feed on foliage at night. However, the larvae are the life stage of primary concern for growers. They go through several instars while developing in the soil, with the duration of the cycle being heavily dependent on environmental conditions and moisture levels.

Damage symptoms are primarily related to root consumption. The larvae feed on both fine root hairs and larger structural roots, which disrupts the plant's ability to take up water and essential nutrients. Infected plants typically show signs of stunting, chlorosis, and sudden wilting. Severe infestations often lead to plant mortality and significant economic losses in field crops.

Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Cultural control, such as deep tillage during peak larval activity, can physically expose the grubs to predators. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides either as a pre-plant treatment or incorporated into the soil during the growing season to provide long-lasting protection to the root zone.
