Description

Phytalus heteroclitus is a significant plant pest belonging to the Scarabaeidae family, specifically the Melolonthinae subfamily. Often referred to as a root-feeding scarab, this species is known for its ability to persist in various soil types, posing a chronic threat to agricultural productivity in infested regions.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage of the insect, which inhabits the soil profile. While the adult beetles feed on the foliage of trees and shrubs, the subterranean larvae are the ones responsible for severe economic losses by directly attacking the root systems of various host plants.

The biological development of this species typically spans multiple years, involving several larval instars spent underground. The larvae are highly resilient and migrate within the soil layers to optimize their microclimate. Once the final larval stage is completed, the insect pupates within a protective earthen cell before emerging as an adult.
