These small insects are highly specialized pests that thrive on various woody plants and shrubs. Their biological classification reflects their adaptation to extracting sap from the vascular tissues of their host plants, which causes physiological stress to the vegetation.

This pest primarily infests fruit trees and various nursery ornamental plants. By targeting young shoots and tender foliage, the insects directly impact the growth potential of the plants. In large nurseries, an infestation can lead to significant economic losses due to reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, and the diminished aesthetic or commercial value of the nursery stock.

The life cycle of Phytolaema herrmanni includes the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The transition through these stages is highly dependent on environmental temperature and humidity. Adult females typically lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of young leaves or near buds. As nymphs emerge, they aggregate in colonies, remaining largely sessile while they feed.

Damage caused by this pest is manifested through leaf curling, chlorosis, and general deformation of new shoots. A distinctive sign is the secretion of honeydew, which creates a sticky surface on the foliage. This sticky residue facilitates the colonization of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight, inhibits photosynthesis, and interferes with the plant’s overall respiratory processes.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention strategies. Growers are advised to:

• Use systemic insecticides that target sucking pests when nymph populations are high.
• Ensure proper tree nutrition to improve plant tolerance to stress.
