Pine woolly adelgid

Taxonomic position. The pine woolly adelgid (genus Pineus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and is a member of the family Adelgidae. These tiny insects are specialized sap-sucking pests that exclusively target coniferous trees and shrubs.

Host plants. The primary hosts include various species of conifers, especially members of the Pinaceae family. Pines, spruces, and occasionally larches are the most frequently infested, particularly in ornamental landscapes and forest nurseries.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the Pineus genus is complex, often involving alternate generations on different host plants. First-instar nymphs typically overwinter in bark crevices or near bud scales. In the spring, they develop into stem mothers, producing eggs covered by white, cotton-like wax secretions that are characteristic of this pest.

Damage and economic impact. Feeding by these insects leads to needle yellowing, stunted growth, and the deformation of shoots. In some species, heavy infestations create galls that inhibit normal tree development. Severe attacks weaken the tree's physiological state, making it susceptible to secondary pests like bark beetles and wood-boring insects.

Protection and control measures. Effective control relies on systemic insecticides applied during the early spring when sap flow begins. Additionally, horticultural oils can be used to suffocate overwintering nymphs. Cultural practices, such as maintaining plant vigor through proper irrigation and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization, help minimize the severity of infestations.
