Pine woolly adelgid

The Pine woolly adelgid (Pineus floccus) is a destructive pest of coniferous trees belonging to the Adelgidae family, order Hemiptera. These tiny insects are specialized sap-feeders that pose a significant threat to the health and aesthetics of pine and spruce trees in both forest and nursery settings.

The primary hosts for Pineus floccus include various species of the Pinus genus, such as the Scots pine. The species often displays a complex life cycle that can involve an alternation of hosts between spruce and pine. They are most easily identified by the presence of white, cotton-like wax secretions that cover the insects and their eggs on the branches.
